What’s driving you?  FIVE universal human needs

star_hg_clrIn Choice Theory (1998), William Glasser got as close as anyone in the 20th century to a simple, elegant model of mental-emotional behavior that even teenagers could pick up and use. He did not explicitly address human spiritual capacity in this model of behavior; for a simple model incorporating spiritual aspirations, see the Three Selves tool. The five universal human needs Glasser identified are:

Security * fun * freedom * power * belonging

Let’s “unpack” these abstractions:

Security -- survival, food, financial security

Fun -- relaxation, celebration, passion, laughter

Freedom -- time, space and resources to pursue your dreams

Power -- personal influence with peers and subordinates

Belonging -- love, intimacy, closeness, connectedness

We all want each of our five needs met and fulfilled--AND--each of us prioritizes these needs according to personal preferences.

It’s easy to identify how you rate and prioritize the five needs, just ask which one is highest for me?  Which is secondary?  and so on.

Q:  How do I measure my own value system here?

A:  To get your own needs profile, assign each quality up to five points, five being highest.  Here, I'll go first:
Security  __/5        Fun  __/5       Freedom  __/5       Power  __/5       Belonging  __/5
Bruce:     1/5                4/5                       3/5                   3/5                        4/5

Okay, now your turn:
Security  __/5           Fun  __/5          Freedom  __/5         Power  __/5          Belonging  __/5
Q:  How do I use this to compare two people?

A:  Each person creates a Needs profile--then compare them!  This suggests where the value systems of two people overlap--and how much they overlap. Glasser suggests doing this especially before two people commit to any long term partnership. Glasser suggests a woman with a needs profile of 33355 is unlikely to be happy with a man whose needs profile reads 55333.

The five needs and the Inner Court

Glasser’s five universal needs distribute themselves organically into the four quadrants of the Inner Court:

Guinevere love & belonging, freedom to pursue your own dream & your own role in the world, emotional-spiritual freedom.

Lancelot fun, freedom to explore and be curious, physical-mental freedom.

Merlin survival (in terms of identity and culture), mental & intellectual security, including the security of cultural and religious traditions.

King Arthur physical power, strength for survival, conviction: “I will survive!”

As you can imagine, each of us has many habits, routines and behaviors around each of these five needs. Find a more complete discussion of the five needs in the book, Your Habit Body.
